Series Description

In 2017, Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) occurred on August 2nd. EOD is the day of the year when human consumption exceeds the annual biological capacity of the Earth. Since the 1970s, EOD has progressed to earlier dates within the year. The most significant environmental problems of our time stem from overpopulation and overconsumption of natural resources. With resource depletion, climate change, pollution, mass extinction, and all the other environmental challenges that we face, it is imperative that we find ways to reduce our impact upon the planet. Reducing the rate at which we consume natural resources, is a critical first step in the journey towards a sustainable human existence.

Rich Simplicity: An Illustrative Journey Among Sustainable Lifestyles is meant to serve as a reminder that life need not be big and modern, to be great. The best things in life are free. To smile and laugh, to befriend and love, to sing and dance, and to enjoy the beauty of the natural world, cost nothing. There are few things we truly need to live a wonderful life. Embracing this reality will steer us towards a sustainable human existence, and help us to reduce consumption, and combat all the other environmental challenges that we face.

Artwork Description

In this artwork, Moreira, an Argentine gaucho, prepares a cup of Mate in his home.

As I drew Moreira, I listened to “The Voyage of the Beagle,” by Charles Darwin. Darwin writes at length about his adventures with the gauchos in Argentina. The year is 1833, and he wanders onto the Argentine Pampas on his way to Buenos Aires.

Darwin’s description of the gaucho way of life portrays an existence as deeply rooted in the natural world as any life can be. They lived off the land, and they slept beneath the stars, and while life was harsh, they found peace within it. They knew nothing of the comforts of the modern world, and owned few possessions, yet they possessed something of far greater value than any modern-day extravagance, peace of mind.

Today, the gauchos have moved into homes, but many still lead remarkably simple lives. Their impact on the planet is small in comparison to modern western lifestyles.

It is my hope that Moreira reminds the viewer that while the extravagances of the 21st century material kingdom are sensational, they are unnecessary to attaining peace of mind and personal well-being.

There is a difference between a big life of material wealth, and a great life of love and laughter and extraordinary memories. The latter can be achieved in a sustainable human existence, the former cannot.

Artwork Background & Techniques

Moreira is an actual Argentine gaucho living in the region of Patagonia. I drew Moreira from a photograph captured by Ezequiel Casares, a U.S. based cinematographer and photographer with roots in Patagonia, Argentina.

The artwork began as a pencil sketch, with care given to proportions from foreground to background. The image came to life as layers of pastel blended to achieve colors that complement each other and enhance the mood of the scene. The choice of paper, along with the use of highlights and shadows create the textures and reflections of the composition. Shades of orange, yellow, and pink create warmth, while shades of blue are mixed with black to create a cooling balance. The scarlet scarf conveys elegance, while the presence of only possessions of necessity, together with the solitude of the moment creates an air of rich simplicity.

Framing Information

Proper framing enhances the visual appeal of the artwork, and preserves its value for future generations. Framing is recommended for the conservation of your work. Originals and prints are best displayed with an acid-free mat.

I generally do not offer framing services for prints.

Custom Framing

In some circumstances, I do frame original work to complete the visual presentation that I strive to achieve. These pieces are sold framed. If you are purchasing a print, and would like it framed in the same manner as the original work, I can arrange for a custom order. Please note that framing your print in the same way that I have framed the original artwork will significantly increase the purchase price. The cost of a custom frame, archival linen mat, UV-protective glass, acid-free foam core mounting board, frame back, frame backing paper, archival framing materials, framing labor, and shipping, can exceed $400.

For framing questions, and custom orders, please contact me at chris@chrismuhlart.com.

Shipping Information

Unframed prints arrive in approximately 2 – 2 ½ weeks. If you have placed a custom order for a framed print, please allow 4 weeks for delivery.
